Hi,

The second film I watched yesterday was the remake of the 1941 classic with the same name.

First I have to say that I am not much of a fan of modern horror films, because usually the directors compensate their (strictly IMHO) lack of talent with gallons of artificial blood and tons of fake intestine.
But this film, while occasionally fairly graphic with blood and gore, does not revel in it - they are kept to what is necessary. After all, a werewolf does not tickle his victims to death.

The story is fairly simple and straight forward with the famous son returning to his dad's mansion because his brother has been butchered. He tries to find out what happened and of course ends up bitten himself.

What really made the film enjoyable for me was the pacing as well as the way it looks - we are presented with the Victorian age without any false romantic make-up. London is dark, foggy and grimy - as it would have been in the day and the village with its very conservative inhabitants never descends into cuteness.

But of course the performances of del Toro, Hopkins, Blunt and Weaving more than anything else make the film what it is. Each of the actors does their job with the professionalism and verve one would expect from such a high-class cast.
You do really care for them and their motifs are logical and thus believable.

If you don't mind a good fright and can take some blood and gore, this is definitely one to watch! (8/10)
